Écorché study of a face sculpted in ZBrush, muscle and vein under the skin

Anatomy for artists · sculpted in ZBrush

You know the names.
Now build the body.

Anatomy taught through sculpting — every muscle built from the skeleton up in ZBrush, no experience required. For anyone who draws, paints, or sculpts the figure and wants it to read as alive, not as a diagram.

01 / The problem

Anatomy is not a vocabulary test. It's a construction problem.

Most anatomy study stops at recognition — you can name the muscle and point to it on a chart. But naming a part is not the same as building it. Under pressure, on the model, the only knowledge that helps is the knowledge you can construct from memory, in order, from the bone out.

01

You memorized the chart

Flashcard anatomy survives the quiz and collapses at the easel. Recognition is not construction.

02

You copied the surface

You rendered every bump you could see and still got a body that feels inflated — skin with nothing underneath holding it up.

03

You skipped the skeleton

Muscle has nowhere to attach. Without the frame the forms float, and the figure reads dead.

02 / The method

Four regions, built the same way every time.

You can't fake a form you have to build. Sculpting from the skeleton out forces the understanding that charts never could — and burns it into visual memory.

Skeleton, then the deep muscles, then the surface — head, torso, arms, legs. You sculpt each region from the frame out, so the method transfers to any pose and any character you make after.

No sculpting experience required. We teach ZBrush from zero, step by step. This isn't a tech tutorial — it's a fine art course that happens to use the fastest learning tool available. Painters, illustrators, animators, designers: the method is for you.

Torso écorché — skeleton on the left, full musculature on the right

Bone first. Then muscle. Then form you can build from memory — structure in service of life, never a diagram.

The one rule this course is built on

03 / How it's taught

Built live, in ZBrush, from the skeleton up.

01

Every form sculpted from scratch

We give you the skeleton, then you layer the muscles onto it, so you understand why each shape sits exactly where it does.

02

ZBrush, start to finish

DynaMesh, ZSpheres, and the brushes I actually use in production. The tool stays out of the way of the anatomy instead of becoming the lesson.

03

Monthly live critiques

Bring your work to a live session. I sculpt over it, on screen, and you watch the fix happen in real time rather than reading it in notes.

04

Keep every file

Every demo sculpt is yours — pull it apart, subdivide it, and study the layers at your own pace after the session ends.

05 / Meet your instructor

I helped build ZBrush. Now I'll teach you the figure.

I'm Ryan Kingslien. I was part of the original team behind ZBrush, where I created tools like the Rake brush and built it's digital anatomy figure.

Over the past twenty years I've trained thousands of artists — at studios like ILM, Blizzard, and EA Shanghai — helping them bridge the gap between technical skill and artistic mastery.

I teach anatomy because I care about the figure — the living one, not the diagram. That conviction is under every lesson here.

06 / What's included

Three bonuses, in the box.

Sculpting foundation study — features of Michelangelo's David

Bonus 01

Sculpting Foundation 101

Three hours of lessons to master the foundation of sculpting in ZBrush. You build your skill by sculpting the timeless features of Michelangelo's David — each project training your eye for proportion, rhythm, and form. The classical foundation under every modern sculptor.

Fourteen high-resolution human model scans used in class

Bonus 02

Fourteen high-resolution model scans

Work from real anatomy. Fourteen professional scans of male and female models used in class — the reference you need to study authentic surface rhythm, proportion, and form, straight from the body itself.

Structural figure sculpt demonstrating massing and the Walnut Method

Bonus 03

Structural Figure Sculpting 101

Make anatomy even more useful. This lesson series moves past the parts into my own sculpting method — structural massing, and the "Walnut Method" I use to block a whole figure before a single muscle goes down.

08 / What people say

What students say.

From the current cohort and the artists who came up through the earlier lessons. Lightly trimmed for length — never invented.

"There are very few instructors as knowledgable and inspiring as Ryan. No BS, 'watch me draw' nonsense — it's practical, step by step, and you will learn."

Dave BlackAnatomy for Artists student
"Mastery is not magic — it's process. Those step-by-step breakdowns have helped me tremendously as I moved from traditional sculpting into digital."
Richard HuskyAnatomy for Artists student
"He showed me a different way to look at anatomy — that artistic anatomy and medical anatomy are not the same thing. His classes make you grow as an artist by forming your eye."
RazvanAnatomy for Artists student
"His explanations build a strong base in your brain — how to look at form, how to sculpt the bigger shapes first. In a short time I've learned so much. It's absolutely amazing."
Muhammad HunainSenior Vegetation Artist
"I learnt so much about how to see form and construct the body — I made an écorché, and now I'm even confident to start a sculpt without symmetry. It skyrocketed my level."
BaxxleyAnatomy for Artists student
"The live classes are amazing — he dives deep into all things sculpting and anatomy. His methodology is very structured, giving you the vision to become a confident sculptor of the human figure."
